I was born in a small town in South Georgia, moved to a large city when I was about four. My big brother Billy Joe and mama and papa, we all joined the big church except Papa. He'd always go back down the country to the little country churches he'd always gone to. Canoochee and Hebron, and Rosemary and Longcreek. My mama always made us a big clay crock full of baked beans and smoked bacon. And we'd gather at someone's house, whoever had plenty of room and after the services we'd tell stories and usually make some music Old dark Henry played the five string banjo And man he'd pick it like a three piece bluegrass band We' be hanging off the long porch, clappin hands Picking and a singing to the Jesus man The heat in the little churches was always provided by an old pot belly stove sittin' on a two by two steel rug. Somebody would stoke it during the service without you ever even knowin' it. Air conditionin' was a paper fan in your hand with the name of the local mortician printed on the back.
